How to Merge PDF Files Into One Without Uploading Them
Open the tool, free and private
To merge PDF files into one, open Merge PDF in Priya LifePDF, add two or more PDFs, drag them into the order you want and click Merge PDFs. The files are combined in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and you download a single document called merged.pdf.
Merging is one of the most common PDF jobs: putting a report together from chapters, attaching appendices to a procedure, or collecting signed forms into one file. The steps below match what you will see on screen.
How to merge PDFs with Priya LifePDF
- Add your files. Drag PDFs onto the upload area or click to browse. You can select up to 100 files at a time and add more afterwards.
- Put them in order. Each file appears in a numbered list with its name and size. Drag a row to a new position, or use the up and down arrows. Files are merged in the order shown.
- Remove anything you do not need. Use the cross on a row to drop a file, or Clear All to start again.
- Choose the bookmark option. Once at least two files are listed, Merge Options appears with one setting, described below.
- Click Merge PDFs. A progress bar shows each file being processed, with a cancel button.
- Download. When the success message appears, click the download button to save
merged.pdf, then rename it to something meaningful.
What the merge option does
The single setting is Preserve bookmarks (create bookmark for each file), and it is on by default. With it on, the merged PDF gets one bookmark per source file, pointing to that file's first page and titled with the file name (without .pdf). In a long document this gives readers a simple navigation panel: click Appendix C and you jump to it.
Two things are worth knowing about this option:
- File names become bookmark titles. A file called
scan0042.pdfproduces a bookmark called scan0042. Rename files before you merge. - It builds new bookmarks per file. It does not rebuild a detailed outline from inside each source document. If you need chapter-level bookmarks, add them to the merged file afterwards.
Turn the option off if you want a merged file with no bookmark panel, for example a short set of pages that will be printed.
What happens to the pages
Every page of every file is copied into the new document in order. Pages are not re-compressed, so text and images keep their original quality, and each page keeps its own size and orientation, so an A4 portrait report and a landscape table can sit in the same file. The merged document is a new PDF, so document properties such as the title are not carried over from the source files; set them with the Edit Metadata tool if they matter.
Tips and common mistakes
- Password-protected files will stop the merge. The tool reports which file is encrypted. Unlock it with Decrypt PDF if you know the password, then add it again.
- Need only some pages? Merge always takes whole files. Cut each source down first with Split PDF, or merge everything and then rearrange or delete pages with the Organize PDF tool.
- Front and back scans. If a scanner produced one file of odd pages and one of even pages, use Alternate Merge, which interleaves them, instead of a straight merge.
- Fillable forms. If a source file has form fields, open the merged file and check they still behave as expected. If the answers only need to be read, flattening the form first gives a more predictable result.
- Number the pages last. Add continuous page numbers to the merged file with the Page Numbers tool, not to the separate parts.
- Large result? Merging does not shrink anything. If the combined file is too big to send, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.
- Check the page count. Before you send the file, confirm the merged page count equals the sum of the parts.
Why merge locally instead of uploading?
A merge often involves several confidential documents at once: a contract with its schedules, a set of payslips, a file of signed forms. With a server-based merger every one of them is sent to someone else's machine. Merge PDF reads and combines the files inside your browser tab, so they stay on your device. You can confirm this yourself with the steps in how to check whether a PDF tool uploads your files, and our article is it safe to upload PDFs to online converters? explains what can happen to uploaded files.
Example: attaching appendices to an SOP for review
A document controller is preparing a revised SOP for circulation to reviewers. The procedure body is one PDF, and there are three appendices: a flow diagram, a form template and a training matrix, each exported separately.
- Rename the files to the titles reviewers should see, for example SOP body, Appendix A Flow diagram, Appendix B Form template and Appendix C Training matrix.
- Add all four to Merge PDF, put them in order and leave the bookmark option on, so each part has its own bookmark.
- Merge, download, and add page numbers to the combined file.
- Check the page count and bookmarks, then circulate the review copy.
The merged file is a new document, so review and approval should still run through your document management system and procedures. Frequently asked questions
How do I combine several PDF files into one?
Open Merge PDF, add the files, arrange them in the list and click Merge PDFs. Download the result, which is saved as merged.pdf.
Does merging PDFs reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied into the new document without re-compressing text or images. If the merged file is too large, compress it separately afterwards.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
Not directly. The tool stops and names the encrypted file, so remove the password with Decrypt PDF first, which requires you to know it.
Will the merged PDF have bookmarks?
With the default option on, the merged file has one bookmark for each source file, named after the file and pointing to its first page.
