About This Tool
Split PDF cuts one PDF into several smaller files. You choose a split method, set its options and click Split PDF; the tool then lists each new file with its own download button and, when there is more than one, a Download All as ZIP button. The original file is left untouched.
Six methods are offered, and each one decides how many files you get:
- Extract by Page Range: every comma-separated entry becomes its own file, so 1-4, 9 produces two PDFs. Leave the box empty to export the whole document as one file.
- Even/Odd Pages: picks out odd pages, even pages or both, saving each chosen page as a separate one-page file.
- Every Page: one PDF per page, with the file count shown before you start.
- Visual Select: click thumbnails, and each selected page is saved on its own.
- Bookmarks: a new file starts at each top-level bookmark.
- Split N Parts: shares the pages as evenly as possible between the number of parts you set.
Each part is a new PDF made from copies of the chosen pages, so page content is unchanged, but the original bookmarks and document properties are not carried into the parts. Names follow the source file plus the part number and page span, for example report_part2_pages_6-10.pdf. If you want several scattered pages gathered into one file, Extract Pages does that. Protected files need unlocking first with Decrypt PDF.
Splitting happens inside your browser tab and the document is not uploaded. That suits long compilations such as a supplier's combined certificate bundle or a record pack that has to be filed section by section; compare the page counts of the parts with the original before you file them.
Step-by-step instructions and common mistakes: How to Split a PDF by Page Range, Bookmark or Single Page.
How to Use
Add one PDF
Drop a PDF on the upload area or click to browse. The tool shows the file details and page thumbnails.
Pick a split method
Under Split Method, choose Extract by Page Range, Even/Odd Pages, Every Page, Visual Select, Bookmarks or Split N Parts.
Set the details
Depending on the method, type ranges such as 1-4, 9, choose odd or even pages, click thumbnails, or enter the number of parts.
Split and save
Click Split PDF. Download each part from its own button, or use Download All as ZIP to get every part in one archive.
Use Cases
File certificates by batch
Break a supplier PDF holding several certificates of analysis into one file per batch by typing one range for each certificate.
Separate a scanned stack
Turn one scan of many single-page forms into individual files with Every Page, ready to rename and file.
Send only the relevant chapter
Cut a long manual into chapters with the Bookmarks method so each reader receives only the part they need.
Break up a file that will not attach
Use Split N Parts to divide a long document into pieces with a similar number of pages, then send them separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did I get several files when I wanted one?
In Extract by Page Range, each comma-separated entry becomes a separate PDF, so 1-3, 5 gives two files. Type a single range for a single file, or use Extract Pages to gather pages that are not next to each other into one PDF.
Can I put all the odd pages into one PDF?
Not with Split PDF. The Even/Odd Pages method saves each chosen page as its own one-page file. To get one document of selected pages, pick them in Extract Pages, which writes them into a single PDF.
How does splitting by bookmarks work?
The tool reads the PDF outline and starts a new file at each top-level bookmark, running to the page before the next one. Pages before the first bookmark become a file of their own, and nested bookmarks do not create extra splits. Without bookmarks, the whole document comes back as one file.
Do the split files keep bookmarks and form fields?
Page content and anything attached to a page are copied, but each part is a new document without the original outline or properties such as title and author. Check fillable fields in the parts before relying on them.
Is there a page or size limit?
The tool sets no fixed cap. The work runs in your browser memory, so very large files are limited by your device. Thumbnails are drawn for the first 50 pages; later pages appear as numbered tiles, and typed ranges still reach every page.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Remove the password with Decrypt PDF first, which needs the current password, then split the unlocked copy.
