Word to PDF: How to Convert a DOCX File in Your Browser

Open the tool, free and private

To convert Word to PDF with Priya LifePDF, open the Word to PDF tool, add your .docx, .doc or .odt file, click Convert to PDF and download the result. The conversion runs inside your browser tab using LibreOffice compiled to WebAssembly, so your document is not uploaded to a server.

The first time you use the tool it has to download that conversion engine, which takes longer than the conversion itself. After that, the engine is kept in your browser's cache and later conversions start much faster. This guide walks through the steps, the settings that exist, and the checks worth doing before you share the PDF.

How to convert Word to PDF with Priya LifePDF

  1. Open the tool. Go to Word to PDF. As soon as the page loads, it starts preparing the conversion engine and shows a progress bar. On a first visit the bar shows the download in megabytes; on later visits it loads from your browser's cache.
  2. Add your document. Drag a Word file onto the upload area, or click it to browse. The tool accepts .docx, .doc and .odt files. The file name and size appear in a card, with a bin icon if you picked the wrong file.
  3. Convert. Click Convert to PDF. A progress bar shows each stage, and you can cancel if you need to.
  4. Download. When the success message appears, click the download button. The PDF is named after your original document.
  5. Check the result. Open the PDF and compare it with the Word file, paying attention to page breaks, tables and headers.

What settings does the Word to PDF tool have?

The single-file converter has no layout settings. Page size, orientation, margins, headers, footers and page numbers are all taken from the document itself, so the PDF follows whatever you set up in Word. If you want A4 rather than Letter, or landscape pages for a wide table, change it in your word processor, save, and then convert.

There are two practical limits built into the tool:

  • File size. Each document can be up to 50 MB.
  • Time. A single conversion stops with an error if it runs for more than five minutes, which usually points to a very long or complex file.

Below the main converter there is a Batch Word to PDF panel. You can add several Word files there and start a batch conversion. Files are converted one after another, and when they finish you can download them all or save them as a single ZIP archive.

If you need one PDF from several documents, convert each one and then join them with Merge PDF. Spreadsheets and slide decks have their own converters: Excel to PDF and PowerPoint to PDF.

Tips and common mistakes

Allow for the first-run download

The LibreOffice engine is large, so the first visit can take a while on a slow or metered connection. Let the progress bar finish before you judge the tool, and use a reliable connection for that first load. The engine is then stored in your browser's cache storage, so you do not download it on every visit. Clearing your browser's site data removes it, and the next visit downloads it again.

Expect font substitution

The engine runs in a sandbox inside the browser and cannot use the fonts installed on your computer. It relies on the fonts bundled with it, plus an additional font for Chinese characters. If your document uses a font the engine does not have, a substitute is used. Different fonts have different widths, so lines can wrap differently and a document can gain or lose a page. If exact typography matters, compare the page count and look closely at tables, headings and any text boxes.

Finalise the document first

Resolve tracked changes and delete comments you do not want before converting, so the PDF reflects the final text. Update fields such as tables of contents in Word first as well, so the page numbers match.

Watch the output size

Documents with many photographs or screenshots produce larger PDFs. If the result is too big to email, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.

Large or complex files

If a very long document hits the time limit, split it into sections in Word, convert each section, and merge the PDFs.

Does Word to PDF upload your document?

No. Your Word file is read and converted locally, inside the browser tab. What the browser does download is the conversion engine itself: the LibreOffice WebAssembly files are fetched from the Priya LifePDF site in parts the first time, reassembled and cached, and then the conversion runs on your own device.

You do not have to take that on trust. Our guide on how to check if a PDF tool uploads your files shows how to watch the network activity in your browser's developer tools while you convert. For the wider picture of what happens when a file is sent to a server-based converter, see is it safe to upload PDFs to online converters.

Example: circulating a draft SOP for review

A quality associate at a small life-science company has drafted a revised standard operating procedure in Word and wants colleagues in the laboratory and in production to comment on it. Sending a PDF means everyone sees the same layout, whatever software they have, and nobody edits the draft by accident.

She opens Word to PDF, accepts or rejects the remaining tracked changes, updates the table of contents, and converts the file. Because the conversion runs in her browser, the unreleased draft is not sent to a third-party conversion server. She then checks the PDF against the Word version: the page count, the section numbering, the tables of equipment settings and the header showing the document number and draft status.

This is a convenience step for circulating a draft. Priya LifePDF is not a validated system, so the controlled, approved version of the SOP should still be issued through the company's own document management process.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert .doc files as well as .docx?

Yes. The Word to PDF tool accepts .docx, .doc and .odt files. Each file can be up to 50 MB.

Why is the first Word to PDF conversion slow?

The first visit downloads the LibreOffice conversion engine to your browser. It is then cached, so later visits load it much faster.

Will my fonts look the same in the PDF?

Not always. The engine cannot use fonts installed on your computer, so fonts it does not include are replaced with substitutes, which can change line breaks and page count.

Is my Word document uploaded to a server?

No. The document is converted locally in your browser tab. Only the conversion engine is downloaded, the first time you use it.
