How to Crop a PDF: Trim One Page or Every Page for Free
Open the tool, free and private
To crop a PDF, open the free Crop PDF tool, add your file, drag the frame on the page preview around the area you want to keep, tick Apply to all pages if every page needs the same crop, then click Crop PDF and download the result. The cropping happens in your browser, and the file is not uploaded.
Cropping is useful for trimming wide margins, focusing on a figure or making scanned pages easier to read on screen. It is important to know what it does inside the file, though, because the parts you trim away are hidden rather than deleted.
How to crop a PDF with Priya LifePDF
- Add your PDF. Open Crop PDF and drag a PDF onto the upload area, or click to browse. The tool works on one file at a time and shows its name and page count.
- Look at the first page. The page appears as a preview with a crop frame that starts around the whole page.
- Draw the area to keep. Drag the frame's edges and corner handles inwards, and drag inside the frame to move it. The frame is a rectangle of any proportions. Use Zoom In, Zoom Out, Reset and Fullscreen on the toolbar below the preview for precise work.
- Choose which pages to crop. Tick Apply to all pages to use this frame on every page. Otherwise, use the arrow buttons or type a number in the page box to move through the document and set a frame on each page you want to crop. The tool remembers each page's frame as you move.
- Click Crop PDF. A progress bar shows the work, with a Cancel button.
- Download the result. When you see PDF cropped successfully!, click the download button. The new file has
_croppedadded to its name.
Crop options, and what cropping really changes
Apply to all pages
With the box ticked, the frame on the page you are viewing is applied to every page in the document. The frame is recorded as a proportion of the page rather than a fixed measurement. On a document where every page is the same size that makes no difference. On a mixed document, such as A4 pages with an A3 fold-out, the kept area scales with each page, so the pages will not all end up the same size.
Cropping page by page
With the box unticked, only the pages you visit are cropped, each with its own frame. Pages you never open in the preview are left exactly as they were. A page you open but do not adjust keeps its full area.
No typed margins or automatic trimming
The crop area is set by drawing the frame. The tool does not take typed measurements and does not detect white space automatically, so zoom in when the edge matters.
Cropping hides content; it does not delete it
PDF pages have a setting called the CropBox, which tells readers which part of the page to show. Crop PDF works by setting the CropBox on each chosen page. Readers then display and print only that area, but the text, images and drawings outside it remain in the file. Anyone using a PDF editor can reset the crop and see them again, and text outside the frame may still turn up in searches, copying or text extraction.
This has two practical consequences. The content you keep is not re-drawn or converted to an image, so text stays sharp and selectable. And cropping is not a way to remove information. If you need to take out names, figures or any other sensitive content before sharing, follow our guide on how to redact a PDF properly and use a redaction tool such as Find and Redact.
Tips and common mistakes
- Check every page of the output. Open the cropped file and page through it. The crop is calculated against each page's full size, so a page that is rotated, or that another program has already cropped, may not line up with the frame you drew.
- Remember Apply to all pages uses the current page. Set the frame on a typical page before clicking Crop PDF, not on a cover or title page with a different layout.
- Unticked means only visited pages. If you crop page 1 and click Crop PDF without visiting other pages, only page 1 changes.
- Do not expect a much smaller file. The hidden content is still stored. To reduce file size, use Compress PDF.
- Unlock protected files first. A PDF that needs a password to open will not load in the preview. Remove the password with Decrypt PDF first, using the password you already have.
- Keep the original. The tool saves a new copy, so keep the uncropped file in case you need the full page later.
- Different job, different tool. To make pages a standard paper size, Fix Page Size is the better choice. To check the dimensions of each page, use Page Dimensions.
Is the PDF sent to a server?
No. Crop PDF draws the preview and sets the crop inside your browser tab, and the document is not uploaded. The first time you use the tool, your browser downloads the program files it needs from the Priya LifePDF site; that is software coming to your device, not your file leaving it. Our guide on how to check if a PDF tool uploads your files shows how to confirm this in your browser's developer tools.
Example: preparing instrument printouts for a report
An analytical scientist has a PDF of chromatograms exported from laboratory software, one per page, each with a wide header and footer carrying run details. For a method development summary, the team wants only the chromatogram itself on each page.
The scientist opens a typical page, draws the frame around the chromatogram, ticks Apply to all pages, crops and then pages through the output to check that every trace sits inside the frame. The summary reads more cleanly, and the full run details are still in the file for anyone who needs them.
That last point cuts both ways. If the header held information that should not leave the team, such as sample identifiers, cropping would not remove it, and the file should be redacted instead. The cropped PDF is also a new file rather than the original record; how it is labelled and stored is a matter for your document control procedures. Frequently asked questions
How do I crop all pages of a PDF at once?
In Crop PDF, draw the frame on a typical page, tick Apply to all pages and click Crop PDF. The same proportional frame is applied to every page.
Can I crop each page differently?
Yes. Leave Apply to all pages unticked, move through the pages with the arrows or page box and set a frame on each one. Pages you do not visit are left unchanged.
Does cropping a PDF permanently remove the hidden content?
No. Crop PDF sets the visible area of each page. Content outside the frame stays in the file and can be revealed with a PDF editor, so redact anything sensitive instead.
Will cropping reduce the quality of my PDF?
No. The content is not re-drawn or turned into an image; only the visible area changes, so text stays sharp and selectable.
