About This Tool

Edit Metadata changes six fields in a PDF's document information dictionary: title, author, subject, keywords, creator application and PDF producer. The boxes open filled with the current values, and saving sets the modification date to the time you save. The XMP metadata stream is not updated, so some viewers may still show the old values.

The creation date is kept; if the file had none, the save time is used. Keywords are typed separated by commas but saved separated by spaces, so a two-word keyword cannot be told apart from two single keywords. A box you empty is saved as an empty value rather than removed. Dates, language and custom properties cannot be edited here, and Reset puts back the values read from the file.

Many PDFs carry the same information twice, in the information dictionary and in an XMP stream, and where the two disagree some viewers and search systems prefer XMP. After editing, check the result in the programs your readers use, or with View Metadata. If the aim is to clear personal data rather than change it, Remove Metadata or Sanitize PDF is the better starting point; How to Remove Metadata from a PDF explains what each approach leaves behind.

Page content is not touched, but the whole file is saved again, so a digital signature in the original will no longer verify. Password-protected files are refused with a message; unlock them first with Decrypt PDF. The edit runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and the copy downloads with _edited added to its name.

How to Use

  1. Upload the PDF

Drop one PDF on the upload area or click to browse. The current values are read into the form.

  2. Edit the fields

Change Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator Application or PDF Producer. Separate keywords with commas, and use Reset to start again.

  3. Save

Click Save Metadata. The modification date is updated automatically.

  4. Download and check

Download the copy, named with _edited added, and check its properties in the viewer you use or with View Metadata.

Use Cases

Replace a leftover title

Swap a template title such as Document1, or an old project name, for the real one before a file is published.

Author as a team

Put a department or team name in the author field instead of an individual's login name.

Describe a published PDF

Add a subject and keywords for document libraries and site search tools that index these fields.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fields can I edit?

Title, author, subject, keywords, creator application and PDF producer. Dates, language, custom properties and the XMP stream cannot be edited with this tool.

Is the XMP metadata updated too?

No. Only the document information dictionary changes. If the file has an XMP stream holding the old values, viewers that read XMP may still show them.

What happens to the dates?

The modification date is set to the moment you save. The creation date stays as it was, or is set to the save time if the file had none. There is no box for typing a date.

Why are the commas gone from my keywords?

The keywords are split at the commas you type and then saved joined by spaces. If separators matter, for example for multi-word keywords, check how the receiving system reads the field.

Can I remove all metadata here?

Emptying a box saves an empty value, but the XMP stream and other entries stay in the file. To strip properties, use Remove Metadata or Sanitize PDF instead.

Does editing affect a signed PDF?

Yes. The file is saved in full, so the existing digital signature will no longer verify. Edit the properties before the document is signed.
