How to Remove Metadata from a PDF (and What Stays Behind)

By Priya Life Science · Published 30 September 2026 · 5 min read

Open the tool, free and private

To remove metadata from a PDF, open Remove Metadata in Priya LifePDF, add the file, tick the fields to clear and click Remove Metadata. It empties the title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer in the document properties, in your browser, without uploading the file. Some metadata stays behind, as explained below.

PDF metadata is information about the document rather than in it. It often records who created the file, which program produced it and when. That is useful inside an organisation and sometimes unwelcome outside it, for example when a draft still carries a colleague's name or an internal project code.

How to remove metadata with Priya LifePDF

  1. Open Remove Metadata and drop in your PDF, or click to browse. The tool works on one file at a time.
  2. Under Select Metadata to Remove, check the tick boxes. Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, Creation Date and Modification Date are all ticked by default. Use Select All or Deselect All to change them quickly.
  3. Click Remove Metadata. A progress bar shows each stage, and you can cancel.
  4. When it finishes, a message lists the fields that were cleared, for example "Removed: title, author, producer".
  5. Click the download button to save the copy, named with _no_metadata added to the original file name.
  6. Open the new file in View Metadata to confirm what remains.

What the tool removes, and what it leaves

The tool uses pdf-lib, an open-source JavaScript library, to edit the PDF's document information dictionary: the standard set of properties most PDF readers show under File, Properties.

Cleared

  • Title, Author, Subject and Keywords, when ticked and present, are set to empty.
  • Creator, usually the program the document was written in, is set to empty when ticked.
  • Producer, usually the software that made the PDF, is set to empty when ticked.

Not removed

  • Dates. The Creation Date and Modification Date tick boxes currently have no effect. The original creation date is kept, and the modification date is set to the moment you processed the file. If the original had no creation date, that time is added as one.
  • XMP metadata. Many PDFs carry a second copy of their properties in an embedded XMP block, which can include the author, the creating software and dates. This tool does not touch it.
  • Custom fields. Extra properties added by document management systems or templates stay in the file.
  • Everything in the document itself. Page text, headers and footers, comments, attachments, form data, bookmarks and hidden layers are unchanged. A name in a footer or a reviewer's comment is not metadata.

For a more thorough clean-up, Sanitize PDF deletes every field in the document information dictionary, including dates and custom fields, removes the XMP block and records Priya LifePDF as the producer. By default it also removes JavaScript, attachments and external links and flattens form fields. Deep Sanitize removes the XMP block, blanks the standard fields, replaces both dates with 1 January 1970, and can strip editor data, optional content layers and annotations. It also removes the document's tag structure, which assistive technology such as screen readers relies on.

Why the "Removed" list almost always includes Producer

When pdf-lib opens a PDF, it writes its own name into the Producer field, and into Creator if the file had no Creator field. The tool then clears those values, so Producer, and sometimes Creator, appear in the "Removed" list even for a file that had no such fields to begin with. The cleaned copy ends up with those fields empty either way.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Look before and after. Open the original in View Metadata first so you know what is there, including any custom fields, then check the cleaned copy.
  • Do not rely on it for dates. If the creation or modification date must not be disclosed, use Sanitize PDF instead.
  • Check the visible content. Names in the text, headers, footers and tracked-change residue need proper redaction, not metadata removal.
  • Want to replace, not erase? Edit Metadata lets you set a neutral author, such as a department name, and a clear title.
  • Keep the original. The cleaned file is a new copy; keep the source version where your records say it belongs.

Is the PDF uploaded?

No. Metadata removal runs locally in your browser tab, and the document is not uploaded. You can confirm this with our guide on how to check if a PDF tool uploads your files.

Example: sharing a protocol summary with an external partner

A clinical operations lead at a small biotech wants to send a protocol summary PDF to a prospective site before a feasibility call. The file was exported from the company's template, so its properties still name the medical writer who drafted it and an internal document code.

  1. She opens the PDF in View Metadata and sees the author, title and a custom field holding the internal code.
  2. Because Remove Metadata leaves custom fields and XMP behind, she runs the file through Sanitize PDF instead. She leaves its default settings as they are, since the summary has no form fields, links or attachments that the partner needs.
  3. She uses Edit Metadata to give the copy a neutral title, then checks it again in View Metadata.
  4. She reads the pages themselves for names in headers or footers before sending.

The shared file is a new copy and should be handled under your own document control procedures. Priya LifePDF is a general-purpose tool, not a validated GxP system; see online PDF tools in pharma and GMP work for what to consider before using any PDF tool on regulated documents.

Frequently asked questions

What metadata does Remove Metadata delete?

It clears the Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator and Producer fields in the document properties. It does not remove dates, custom fields or the embedded XMP metadata block.

Does it remove the creation and modification dates?

No. The original creation date is kept and the modification date is set to the time you processed the file. Use Sanitize PDF if the dates must go.

Does removing metadata remove comments or hidden text?

No. Comments, attachments, form data, hidden layers and the text on the pages are unchanged. Use Sanitize PDF for comments and attachments, and redaction for text.

Is my PDF uploaded when I remove its metadata?

No. The tool runs in your browser tab using pdf-lib, and the file stays on your device.
