How to Add a Watermark to a PDF Free in Your Browser

Open the tool, free and private

To add a watermark to a PDF, open the free Add Watermark tool, drop in your file, type your text or choose a PNG or JPG image, set the opacity, angle and pages, then click Add Watermark and download the copy. Priya LifePDF does this in your browser, and the document is not uploaded.

A watermark is a visible marking that sits behind or across the page content. It is useful for showing that a copy is a draft, is confidential or belongs to your organisation. It is not a way of protecting the content, and this guide explains why.

How to add a watermark to a PDF with Priya LifePDF

  1. Open the tool. Go to Add Watermark.
  2. Add your PDF. Drag one PDF onto the upload area or click to browse. The tool works on one file at a time.
  3. Choose the type. Under Watermark Options, select Text Watermark or Image Watermark.
  4. Set up the watermark. For text, type your wording in Watermark Text (it starts as CONFIDENTIAL) and adjust the font size, colour, opacity and angle. For an image, choose a PNG or JPG file, then adjust the opacity and angle.
  5. Tile it if you want. Under Repeat Watermark, switch on Tile watermark across the entire page to repeat it in a grid instead of placing it once.
  6. Choose the pages. Under Page Range, pick All Pages, Odd Pages, Even Pages or Custom Range. A custom range takes page numbers and ranges such as 1, 3, 5-10.
  7. Check the preview. The preview panel updates shortly after each change. It shows one page only: the first page in your selection.
  8. Apply and download. Click Add Watermark, then the download button. The file is saved with _watermarked added to its name.

What the watermark options do

Text watermarks

  • Font size accepts values from 10 to 200.
  • Colour can be chosen with the colour picker or typed as a hex code. The default is mid grey.
  • Opacity runs from 10% to 100% in steps of 10. The default of 30% keeps the text underneath readable.
  • Angle runs from -90 to 90 degrees in steps of 5. The default of -45 gives the familiar diagonal watermark.

Plain English text is drawn in Helvetica Bold. If your text contains other characters, such as accented letters or Chinese, Japanese or Korean script, the tool loads an extra font (Noto Sans CJK) to draw them. Check the preview if you are using any other script.

Image watermarks

The image must be a PNG or JPG. It is converted to PNG in your browser before it is added. There is no size slider: the image is placed at half its pixel dimensions, so a logo 400 pixels wide appears about 7 cm wide on the page. To make it larger or smaller, resize the image before you add it. A PNG with a transparent background usually looks cleaner than a JPG with a white box around the logo. The angle starts at 0 for images.

Placement and tiling

A single watermark is placed in the middle of each selected page; there is no option for corners or margins. With tiling switched on, you can set the Horizontal Spacing and Vertical Spacing between repeats, each from 20 to 600 points (defaults 200 and 150). Staggered Layout, on by default, shifts alternate rows sideways so the pattern looks less like a grid.

What ends up in the file

The watermark is written into the page content itself. It is not added as a separate layer or a comment, so a reader cannot switch it off. It is still ordinary page content, though, and PDF editing software can alter or remove it.

Tips and common mistakes

  • A watermark is not security. Anyone who receives the file can still read, copy and print it. If the content is confidential, add a password with Encrypt PDF (see how to password protect a PDF), and remove anything the recipient should not see by following how to redact a PDF properly.
  • Keep the original. The watermarked file is a new download. Keep the clean version so you can issue a different copy later.
  • Watermark last. Finish merging, reordering and numbering pages first, so every page of the final file is covered.
  • Keep it readable. Dark, opaque text across a dense table or a scanned page can hide numbers. Stay near the default opacity and check the preview.
  • Check custom ranges. Page numbers beyond the end of the document are ignored. If nothing in your range matches a real page, the download will have no watermark, so open it and check before sending.
  • Do not watermark a digitally signed PDF. Any change after signing alters the file the signature covers. Watermark first, then sign.
  • Need a fixed line of text instead? For a document reference, date or page number in the margin, Header & Footer is a better fit than a watermark.

Is your PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and watermarked inside your browser tab, and the watermarked copy is created on your device. Your document and any image you add are not uploaded. One detail worth knowing: when your text needs the extra font described above, your browser downloads that font file from a public font repository and keeps a copy for next time. That is a download to your device, not an upload of your file. You can confirm this yourself with our guide on how to check if a PDF tool uploads your files, and read is it safe to upload PDFs to online converters? for the wider picture.

Example: circulating a draft for comment

A regulatory affairs associate at a small biotech needs outside comments on a draft briefing document before a scientific advice meeting. The draft will be emailed to two consultants, and nobody should mistake it for the final version. They open it in Add Watermark, type DRAFT FOR COMMENT, lower the opacity to 20%, switch on tiling so every part of each page carries the marking, and check the preview before downloading. Because the watermark does not stop anyone copying the text, they also encrypt the file and phone the consultants with the password.

Controlled GMP documents are different. How an SOP or batch record shows its status is set by the company's document management procedures, and many organisations use the watermarking built into their approved document system. For a visual status marking on a PDF copy, the GMP Stamp tool offers presets such as DRAFT and SUPERSEDED. Priya LifePDF is a general-purpose tool, not a validated GxP system; our article on online PDF tools in pharma and GMP work covers what to check first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a logo as a PDF watermark?

Yes. Choose Image Watermark and add a PNG or JPG. It is placed at half its pixel size, so resize the image first if you want it larger or smaller on the page.

Can I watermark only some pages of a PDF?

Yes. Under Page Range, choose odd pages, even pages or a custom range such as 1, 3, 5-10. All pages are selected by default.

Can a PDF watermark be removed?

A reader cannot hide it, because it is written into the page content. PDF editing software can still alter or remove it, so do not rely on a watermark to protect content.

Is my PDF uploaded when I add a watermark?

No. The watermark is added in your browser tab and the new file is created on your device. Your document and image are not uploaded.
