About This Tool

PDF to Word turns a text-based PDF into an editable .docx file. Add one PDF and select Convert to DOCX: the open-source pdf2docx library, running inside your browser, rebuilds each page as Word paragraphs, pictures and tables. Every page is converted, and the Word file takes the name of your PDF.

The converter reads the text, fonts, images and drawn lines on each page. Font, size, bold, italics, colour and alignment usually survive, as do one- and two-column layouts, and tables with visible ruling lines become real Word tables. Borderless table detection is switched off here, so a table built from spacing alone comes through as lines of text. Vector graphics that cannot be rebuilt, such as some charts, are placed as pictures at 72 dpi and can look soft when printed.

A scanned page holds a photograph of paper rather than text, so it lands in Word as an image you cannot edit. Recognise the words first with OCR PDF. A password-protected file has to be unlocked with Decrypt PDF before it will convert.

Conversion happens in this tab through Pyodide, a WebAssembly build of Python, so the PDF is not uploaded. The engine files, over 50 MB in total, come from this site and are usually kept by your browser after the first run. If you are reviving a controlled document such as an SOP whose Word source is lost, treat the result as a draft and check it line by line, numbers and table cells in particular, against the approved PDF.

Step-by-step instructions and common mistakes: How to Convert PDF to Word Without Uploading Your File.

How to Use

  1. Add one PDF

Drag a PDF onto the Upload PDF File area or click it to browse. A card shows the file name and size, with a bin icon if you picked the wrong file.

  2. Select Convert to DOCX

There are no settings to choose. The whole document is converted, page by page.

  3. Let the engine load

Status lines such as Loading Python environment and Installing pdf2docx appear while the converter starts, followed by a progress bar for the conversion itself. A Cancel button is available throughout.

  4. Download and compare

Select Download to save the .docx file, then open it next to the original PDF and check headings, tables and figures before you edit.

Use Cases

Starting the next SOP revision

Only the signed PDF of a procedure survives. Converting it gives an editable starting point for the redline, so the text is not retyped from scratch before it goes through change control.

Answering a supplier questionnaire

A quality questionnaire arrives as a flat PDF with no form fields. Convert it, type the answers into the Word file and turn it back into a PDF with Word to PDF.

Reusing sections of a report

Lift paragraphs and ruled tables out of a finished report into a new document while keeping the original fonts and table borders roughly in place.

Refreshing a training handout

Update dates, names and steps in a handout that was only ever circulated as a PDF, then reissue it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my formatting be kept?

Much of it, on a PDF that contains real text. Fonts, sizes, colours, alignment, images and one- or two-column layouts are rebuilt, and tables drawn with ruling lines become Word tables. Page headers, footers and bulleted lists usually arrive as ordinary text, and borderless tables arrive as lines of text because that detection is turned off. Plan for some tidying.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

Not into editable text. A scanned page is a picture, so it is placed in Word as an image. To get the words, run the scan through OCR PDF, which can output a searchable PDF or a plain text file, and check the recognised text carefully.

Why is the first conversion slow?

The converter is a Python program that runs in the browser, so the tab first downloads and starts it: more than 50 MB of files, including PyMuPDF, OpenCV and pdf2docx. Your browser normally caches those files, which shortens later runs, but the engine is started afresh for every conversion, so a short pause before each job is normal.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Not as it stands. Unlock it with Decrypt PDF, which needs the current password, then convert the unlocked copy.

Is my PDF sent anywhere?

No. The file is read inside the tab and converted by a background worker on your device. The only downloads are the engine files from this site, and the finished .docx is created locally.
