About This Tool
Edit PDF lets you mark up a document on top of its pages. Pick a tool from the toolbar above the page, such as Text, Highlight, Rectangle or Note, click or drag on the page to add it, then choose Export and PDF to download an annotated copy. Your original file is left as it was.
The toolbar holds Select, Highlight, Strikeout, Underline, Rectangle, Circle, Note, Arrow, Cloud, Free Hand, Free Highlight, Text, Signature and Stamp. Highlight, Strikeout and Underline need text you can select; on a scanned page, Free Highlight or a shape does the job. The Comment panel lists every annotation page by page, with replies and a status for each note. Choosing Export and then Excel saves a spreadsheet of the annotations and replies, with page, type, author, date, content and status columns.
A few limits are worth knowing before you start. The editor cannot retype or reflow the words already in the PDF, so wording changes belong in the source document. Markup is saved as annotations, which another PDF program can move or delete. A box or highlight does not hide the text beneath it. On export the editor rebuilds each page's annotation list from its own markup, so existing links and form fields may not come through; check the download.
The file is opened from your device inside the browser tab and is not uploaded. When you review a draft SOP or report, the annotated copy and comment list are working documents for discussion, not a record of approval or an audit trail.
Step-by-step instructions and common mistakes: Edit a PDF: Add Text, Highlights, Shapes and Comments.
How to Use
Load the PDF
Drop one PDF onto the upload area or click to browse. After a short loading spinner it opens in the editor.
Pick a tool
Choose from the toolbar above the page: text markup, shapes, arrows, clouds, freehand lines, text boxes, notes, a signature or a stamp.
Add and adjust markup
Select text for Highlight, Strikeout or Underline, drag for shapes and lines, or click to place text and notes. Use Select to move, resize or recolour an item.
Export
Click Export and choose PDF for an annotated copy, or Excel for a spreadsheet of every annotation and reply.
Use Cases
Reviewing a draft procedure
Underline unclear steps, strike out repeated text and pin notes where a form reference is missing, then send the author the marked-up copy.
Working through review comments
Export the comments to Excel so a team can go through each one in a meeting, with its page and status.
Pointing out changes on drawings
Add arrows, clouds and text boxes to a diagram, floor plan or scanned page to show exactly what needs to change.
Proofreading a report
Highlight typing errors and wrong figures in a report PDF before it goes to print or to a client.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the words that are already in the PDF?
No. The editor adds markup on top of the page. To change the original wording, edit the source file and make a new PDF, or convert the PDF first with PDF to Word.
Does a black rectangle hide sensitive text?
No. A shape is an annotation drawn over the page, and the text under it stays in the file where it can be searched or copied. See Redact PDF for the steps needed to remove content.
Can other people change my annotations?
Yes. Exported markup stays as standard PDF annotations, so another PDF editor can move, edit or delete it. One way to fix it in place is Rasterize PDF, which redraws each page as an image; check that your markup appears in the result, and note that the text will no longer be selectable.
How do I save my work?
Click Export, then PDF. Your markup exists only in the open tab until you export it, so closing the tab or clicking Clear takes you back to the original file.
Is my PDF uploaded while I edit?
No. The file is opened from a local browser address inside the tab, and the exported PDF or spreadsheet is created on your device.
