How to Remove a Password from a PDF When You Know It
Open the tool, free and private
To remove a password from a PDF, open the free Decrypt PDF tool, add the file, type the password you already use to open it and click Decrypt PDF. You then download an unlocked copy that opens without a password. Everything happens in your browser, and the file is not uploaded.
This is for your own documents, or files someone has shared with you along with the password. The tool cannot recover or get round a password you do not know. If you have forgotten it, ask the person who created the file for an unprotected copy.
How to remove a PDF password with Priya LifePDF
- Add the protected PDF. Open Decrypt PDF and drag your file onto the upload area, or click to browse. The tool works on one file at a time and shows its name and size.
- Enter the password. In the Enter Password panel, type the current password into the PDF Password field. The eye button beside the field shows what you have typed, which helps catch a typing mistake.
- Click Decrypt PDF. A progress bar shows the work, with a Cancel button if you change your mind. If the password is wrong, a message tells you so; close it, check the password and try again.
- Download the unlocked copy. When you see PDF decrypted successfully!, click the download button. The new file has
_decryptedadded to its name. - Check the result. Open the copy in your usual PDF reader and confirm it opens without asking for a password.
The field's hint says you can leave it empty for a PDF that only has owner password restrictions. In practice the tool will not run without a password, so for that kind of file use Remove Restrictions, described below.
Decrypt PDF, Remove Restrictions or Change Permissions?
A PDF can carry two kinds of password. The user (open) password must be typed before the file will display. The owner password controls permission settings such as blocking printing, copying or editing. Priya LifePDF has three tools that deal with these, and each suits a different situation. All three use qpdf, an open-source PDF library, compiled to run in the browser.
Decrypt PDF: the file asks for a password to open
Use Decrypt PDF when your reader prompts for a password and you know it. The tool opens the file with that password and writes a copy with the encryption removed entirely. Because the whole encryption layer goes, any permission restrictions go with it: the copy opens freely and can be printed, copied and edited.
Remove Restrictions: the file opens, but printing or copying is blocked
Some PDFs open without any prompt but will not let you print, copy text or edit. That is an owner password at work. Remove Restrictions is built for this case. Its owner password field is optional, and the tool itself states that it cannot remove a user password required to open the document. It also reminds you to use it only on PDFs you own or have permission to modify.
Change Permissions: keep protection, but change the rules
If you want to adjust what readers may do rather than strip protection away, use Change Permissions. You enter the current password if the file is encrypted, choose which actions to allow, such as printing, copying, annotating or filling forms, and set a new user password, owner password or both. The file is then encrypted again with 256-bit AES. Restrictions are only enforced when you set an owner password. If you leave both new password fields empty, the tool simply removes the encryption, much like Decrypt PDF.
Tips and common mistakes
- Keep the protected original. Decrypt PDF saves a new copy and does not change the file on your computer. Keep the original as you received it, especially if it came from an outside party.
- Treat the unlocked copy with care. Anyone who gets hold of it can read it. Store it somewhere appropriate, and delete working copies you no longer need.
- Passwords are exact. They are case-sensitive, and a password pasted from an email can carry a hidden space at the end. Use the eye button to check before you try again.
- Unlock before other tasks. Many PDF operations cannot work on an encrypted file. Decrypt a copy first, then split, merge or compress it as needed.
- Re-protect before sending. If the unlocked file has to travel again, add a new password with Encrypt PDF. Our guide on how to password protect a PDF covers strong passwords and sending them safely.
- A forgotten password cannot be recovered here. Priya LifePDF does not store passwords and does not try to guess them. The only route is to get the password, or an unprotected copy, from whoever made the file.
Is the PDF or the password sent to a server?
No. Decryption runs locally in your browser tab, and your document and the password you type are not uploaded. The qpdf engine is a WebAssembly file your browser downloads from the Priya LifePDF site the first time you use the tool; that is software coming to your device, not your file leaving it. You can confirm this yourself by following our guide on how to check if a PDF tool uploads your files.
Example: filing a protected supplier document
A quality assurance associate at a medical device company receives a supplier's audit response as an encrypted PDF, with the password sent separately by the supplier's quality contact. The company's document management system cannot index the text of an encrypted file, and the associate also needs to combine the response with the audit report for review.
The associate keeps the file exactly as received, uses Decrypt PDF with the supplied password to create an unlocked working copy, checks that it opens and that every page is present, then merges it with the audit report. How the working copy is identified, reviewed and stored is a matter for the company's document control procedures. Priya LifePDF is a general-purpose tool, not a validated GxP system, so its use with regulated records should be assessed under your own quality system.
